ARE YOU SERIOUS taxi slogan applied onto a shirt by the Milaya Project using traditional South Sudanese embroidery. The raw-cut hem will fray and evolve with time.
Like this shirt, minibus taxis in Uganda are imported and second-hand. Their identity is localised through hand-drawn slogans stuck onto the windows. This artwork reflects the personality and belonging of the driver or owner. Slogans are mostly religious or playful.
The Milaya Project is a non-profit working with women artisans living in Bidi Bidi settlement in Uganda, the world's second largest refugee camp. Bidi Bidi is located 11 hours away from Kampala by bus. All proceeds of the embroidery commissions return to the women.
