The hood of a maroon, unisex hoodie is partially chopped off to create the illusion of a turtleneck. The original artwork is covered by a new, cursive Kampala graphic, hand-embroidered by The Milaya Project. Featuring distressed finishings on the cuffs, hems and seams.

It takes 21 hours to upcycle this unique RETURN TO SENDER hoodie between Bidi Bidi and our studio in Kampala.

Second-hand clothing is part of the RETURN TO SENDER upcycling philosophy. The original artwork of this hoodie is rejected and covered with a hand-embroidered graphic that references souvenirs and tourist merchandise. 

The traditional hand embroidery is the work of South Sudanese women artisans of The Milaya Project.

About The Milaya Project
A milaya is a hand-embroidered bedsheet that South Sudanese girls learn to make from their mothers and grandmothers, traditionally used as dowry and decor. In 2016, when families fled the war in South Sudan for Uganda, they carried only what they could wrap and tie in their milayas. These milayas now decorate the walls and furniture in their new homes.

The Milaya Project supports South Sudanese women artisans based at the Bidi Bidi refugee settlement in Uganda, 11 hours from our Kampala studio by bus.
