Kampala Iconography
Localising second-hand clothing is part of the RETURN TO SENDER upcycling philosophy. Here, the original artworks on T-shirts are rejected and printed over with a local design inspired by taxi minibuses in Kampala. 

Toyota Hiace minibuses in Kampala are called Taxis but used to be called matatus. Like the clothes we upcycle, the minibuses are second-hand and imported, then localised with hand-painted vehicle markings and destination signs: LICENSED TO CARRY 14 PASSENGERS, KAMPALA, IN GOD WE TRUST…  

For more than two decades, Mzee George has painted the now iconographic lettering onto minibuses. His font is unmissable and inseparable from the iconography of Kampala, if not Uganda. Mzee George designed the graphics for the Taxi T-shirts. The localisation of vehicles is transferred to the localisation of second-hand clothes.
